From the News letter........ROBERT BROWN WRITES ...
...... sometimes amateur sport is not just enjoyable; sometimes it can be downright inspirational. Take our men's second teamthis season. To start with it was George Green's first year as captain. This is ademanding job. Fine, millions of hysterical fans don't complain about your every decision but you still have to get a team out each week, fret about personalities, collect fees and all the rest of it. Not for you the luxury of hurling tea cups and boots at mardy players, you have to be adult and responsible. So off went George and his lads for the first match of the season and back they came with nil points, in fact with nil sets. Oh dear.
By the end of the season the change was complete. They only had to draw their last match against Ketton to be promoted. Why was there this complete change of fortune; experience may be? Perhaps it was George's leadership. It was Ketton's home fixture but they had problems with their venue so offered us the points. No way, said our team we want to play tennis not just talk about it. So the match was played on Friday 8th October in our domes and a fine time was had by all, including a small crowd of thankfully not too rowdy supporters. We won 5:3, a score that reflects the balance of play. Ketton were sporting and competitive and enjoyed it almost as much as our guys.
Tennis is a great game to play and watch when the competitors are of a similar standard. There is a balance between attack and defence. Tactics come into play; styles can be varied to frustrate a stronger pair. So it was on Friday. It was especially pleasing to see how all the players knew what shots to play and when. Shot selection was excellent. Net play was good and aggressive. It was impressive. Why bother to pay a hundred pounds or more to watch elite sport when you can get such enjoyment on your doorstep. One final point, two of Ketton's team were over 70 - tennis is a sport for all.
So congratulations to the men's second team and in particular well done George !
